Printing is a fascinating and affordable way to present information and is actually a much more elegant way to present information than some digital solutions. You can go beyond this basic principle by using the material itself as the fourth dimension of space. For example, you can make a whole-object shape by printing a single material that does a little more than fuse two other materials. There are also some researchers who are exploring a fifth-dimensional printing technology that would allow for the creation of objects with all five dimensions of space (more on that in a moment). 5D printing is also in its infancy, but it is very similar to 4D printing, which is itself closely related to 3D printing. Like 4D printing, it fuses multiple materials in one-piece and is one of the most exciting and powerful printing technologies available. What is it? Unlike 3D printing, which is based on extruding or spreading a thin layer of material, 4D and 5D printing are additive processes. This means that each layer is built up one by one. In a sense, 4D and 5D printing is just “more” 3D printing. We should note that other additive processes are also viable, such as machining or milling; they are simply not generally used in the way they are used in 4D and 5D printing.
