Position Summary:

ParentCorps is seeking an exceptional Communications Specialist to guide the evolution of communications strategy in parallel to ParentCorps’ national growth. 

 

The Center for Early Childhood Health and Development (CEHD) in the Department of Population Health (DPH), NYU Grossman School of Medicine is composed of a racially and ethnically diverse group of researchers, mental health professionals, educators and staff, working in NYC and around the globe to improve the health and development of children and advance health equity by developing and testing real-world solutions for children living in low-income communities. 

Based in CEHD, ParentCorps is an evidence-based model that partners with pre-K programs in historically disinvested communities, with long-term positive impacts on children’s long-term mental health, physical health, and academic achievement. In close partnership with pre-K programs, ParentCorps works to build a different pre-K experience – one that centers race and culture, engages parents as partners, and supports children’s social-emotional well-being – to help unlock the full promise of early childhood education. ParentCorps’ evidence of impact is endorsed by Blueprints for Healthy Youth Development, the Office of Head Start Early Childhood Learning and Knowledge Center, Child Trends, and other government and nonprofit organizations. Reaching thousands of children in NYC (in partnership with the nation’s largest universal pre-K initiative), in addition to partnerships in Michigan and Texas, ParentCorps is embarking on a strategic growth plan to expand reach nationwide. ParentCorps is seeking an exceptional content creator, research translator, and marketing professional to guide the evolution of our communications strategy in parallel to ParentCorps’ national growth. The Communications Specialist will lead efforts to boost ParentCorps’ public engagement across multiple channels, including: monthly newsletter, website, social media, our new ParentCorps Portal for early childhood professionals, and more. The ideal candidate will be an exceptional writer with experience leading or supporting a robust communications strategy for a national venture; knowledge of early childhood or K-12 education (including influential bodies, convenings, momentum towards racial justice, etc.), and, most importantly, enthusiasm to advance outward-facing projects that articulate a new vision of emotionally responsive, culturally responsive early childhood education nationwide. 

This position will report directly to ParentCorps’ Program Manager for Strategic Partnerships with a dotted line reporting relation to the Department of Population Health’s Communication team, and by extension, the central Communications & Marketing office. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Strategy:

Building upon a 2020 strategic plan, refine an overall communications strategy aligned with ParentCorps’ larger strategic goals. Build upon current strategies, including curating stories from program staff and partners, highlighting new research, sharing tools and resources relevant to our growing community invested in advancing equity in early childhood education, and facilitate new tactics to enhance public engagement. Develop and execute project plans, prioritize external opportunities, recalibrate day-to-day progress in the face of challenges, and apply a collaborative, feedback-oriented mindset to all efforts. Track, measure and report on effectiveness of communications. Develop an integral understanding of the ParentCorps brand to ensure that internal and external communications materials are tied to ParentCorps’ overall goals and authentic to our work in schools nationwide. 

  • Research Translation:  

Support ParentCorps Manager of Research Strategy to translate ParentCorps ongoing research findings across communications channels and to the field/public (e.g., conferences, webinars, media appearances, etc.). Digest scholarly research, including from faculty members in CEHD, and consider relevance to transform into accessible messages for multiple audiences. Work to communicate complex topics in accessible ways, informed by the science of early childhood development and ParentCorps theory of action. 

  • Content Creation: 

Create and oversee work plans to produce new content with a compelling, consistent voice, including for the monthly newsletter, website, and our ParentCorps Portal for early childhood professionals; launch high-impact social media presence; pitch and co-author long-form writings. Collaborate with two program team members in support of external communications, and create additional opportunities for program team members to translate innovations externally. Pause to critically examine language when needed, especially through an equity lens.  

  • Media Relations:

Serve as point person for external media opportunities, prioritizing and coordinating involvement as needed.  

  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Public Affairs, Communications, Public Policy, Education, or related field 

  • Minimum of 2 years of communications experience, either in-house or in an agency. 

  • Strong portfolio of content demonstrating writing/editing skills, and experience with communication platforms (e.g., Google Analytics, Wix, MailChimp, Twitter, LinkedIn). 

  • Experience driving projects, with ability to collaborate with a large team. 

  • Excellent writer and content creator, and exceptional researcher. 

  • Knowledge of early childhood or K-12 education. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree in Journalism, Public Affairs, Communications, Public Policy, Education, or related field 

  • 5+ years of communications experience, either in-house or in an agency.
